Granville Tailer Woods (1856-1910) was an engineering pioneer. Self-taught, Woods focused his work on developing improvements in telecommunications and transportation. Although less known than his contemporaries, Woods’ contributions shaped innovation in the 19th century.

With over 60 patents, Granville T. Woods was one of the most prominent inventors of his era. An unstoppable force of ingenuity, he developed ground-breaking advancements in telephony, including his Synchronous Multiplex Railway Telegraph—a device that allowed spoken voice and Morse code to be transmitted simultaneously over a single wire. This vastly improved rail safety and logistics enabling real-time communication between stations and moving trains.

Following the Great Blizzard of 1888, when New York demanded safer electrical systems, Woods’ enhancements to the electrified third rail helped usher in a new era of transit safety. His Electric-Railway Conduit used wire brushes and terminal heads both to eliminate exposed wiring and to ensure that once the train car had passed over, the wires were no longer live, dramatically reducing the risk of injury.

Common to many of his inventions was the creation of a magnetic field around a coiled wire. Granville T. Woods created elegant and powerful solutions from the humble inductor. We took this inspiration and adopted the inductor as our symbol.

The impact of Granville T. Woods’ work is still being felt today. His legacy of advancing technology while safeguarding people and their resources is, at its core, the ethos of everything we do at Granville Systems.

Secure Innovation™ isn’t just our idea, it’s our heritage.
