MCKINSEY - RISK & RESILIENCE
Evolving Model Risk Management in the Age of AI
Banks are evolving their model risk management (MRM) frameworks to address the rapid adoption of AI, particularly generative and agentic AI, balancing innovation with regulatory compliance and risk control. While also ensuring risk-sensitive value creation.

OUR POINT OF VIEW
Evolving model risk management isn't a brake on Al. Done right, it's how you press the accelerator.
The question worth asking about an AI model is not only “how risky is it?” but “what value does it create, what threat could erode value, and what opportunities could increase value?”
McKinsey frames the shift precisely: model risk management is evolving to support rapid AI adoption, “while also ensuring risk-sensitive value creation.” Read that last phrase again. Risk management and value creation are being described in the same breath, as one activity. We think that convergence is the real story — and it is the idea our work is built around.
We call it Mission Value Orchestration (MVO). Most organizations still run growth in one room and risk in another, speaking different languages. MVO runs them as a single loop around mission: value creation grounded in Valorys, our foundational value-creation system, and value preservation drawing on the disciplines organizations already trust — enterprise risk management, resilience, and governance. The point is not to add oversight. It is to make creating value and protecting it the same conversation. And it runs continuously, across the whole lifecycle — from strategy through implementation and into day-to-day operations — not as a one-time exercise or a fix confined to a single domain.
A risk is an uncertainty that could affect value: if it can decrease value it is a threat; if it can increase value it is an opportunity. The goal of MVO is not only to preserve value by mitigating threats, but to increase value by exploiting opportunities — and both require risk-aware decision-making, which comes from integrating enterprise risk management into the Valorys Central Cycles. Treating a threat as a potential value-erosion event is what lets a growth bet and a cyber exposure finally be weighed on the same terms. It is also why AI raises the stakes on both halves at once: the capability that accelerates value creation simultaneously widens exposure — model drift, data risk, new attack surface, regulatory uncertainty. Orchestrating the two together isn’t optional anymore. It’s the job — and, in a sentence, it’s what we mean by Secure Innovation: moving fast because you can see, preserve, and grow the value at stake.
